how far should the cam dowel pin protrude from th e cam gear??

I am in the middle of doing a complete rebuild and I am at the point of putting on the opti and I am doing a 94 - 95 opti conversion. I installed a comp cam 07-306-8 cam shaft with a LT4 extreme duty timing set.

How far should the dowel pin protrude from the cam timing gear???

With the timing set installed my pinprotrudes out maybe .050, and yes .050 not .50. If I am correct shouldn't the pin drive the opti and shouldn't I have more pin to fit into the notch of the opti gear??

It's a comp cam 306 cam, shouldn't I not have to worry about this?? I am going to be soo upset if I have to take it all apart.

Thanks
John

My total stock pin length was ~.650 and protrusion from the stock cam gear was ~.410.

.050 sounds awfully short. It's got to be able to get some depth into the opti drive for it to work. My .410 measurement is not from an LT4 gear, but I think it would be relatively the same.

Looking at that picture, it looks like a '94 cam. The hole in the center seems too small for a '95 opti to fit. Compare with this picture.

the picture is just for reference, on mine the opti will have no problem going on except the dowel pin extends out about as far as the picture. Now that isn't right is it??

That one actually looks a little excessively long.

The link that you say looks like yours is not gonna cut it.

Yea, that looks to be about an inch past the timing gear. I don't see how you're going to correct the problem without pulling the cam.

Just got off the phone with comp cams, I told him what has happened and what my engine was. He tells me, now get this...
"you must have got one with a short pin"

I didn't know they made the cc 306 with a short pin??

I guess it is turning out ok, He says he will send me a new pin at no charge and also told me how to remove the old pin and install the new one. I just hate having to remove the cam and install it all over again. Now I just have to play the waiting game.

I guess it is my fault for not checking the lenght of the pin before I installed the cam, I just took for granted that the cc 306 came with only one size pin.

Thanks for all the help
John

Curious as to what they told you about removing the pin as it is a common question around here.

My stock cam is a 94 cam so the pin in that is also short.

The way they told me to remove the pin was to remove the cam from the engine and install the pin in a vise and then using a dead blow hammer (one of those plastic hammers with sand in it) so you won't hurt the face of the cam and bang on the front of the cam. Install by just dead blowing it in place.
