High Idle

Took a drive this afternoon and after about 10 minutes noticed that when I pushed the clutch in, the idle would hang at about 2 grand, then slowly drop to about 250 rpm higher than normal idle. Any ideas? Thanks.

Which valve would you be refering to? Thanks.

Probably Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. It and the passages might need to be cleaned. The valve could also be lazy and need to be replaced.

I also think that it is not too unusual for the idle to remain slightly elevated on a manual trans car for a very brief time, like if you are purring along and just throw in the clutch.

Thanks Shoe. This just started all of a sudden. The dang thing actually will stay at 2K with the clutch out. Kind of unnerving in traffic. I'll give the IAC a look. Thanks again.

Also, you might want to look over your vacuum hoses. Make sure they are all on and replace any that are cracked or brittle.

Took the elbow off and sprayed some carb cleaner in there and it runs fine now. Need to do a good cleaning on it though before it does it again. Thanks for the help.

Here's the link to Shoebox's picture of the Idle Air Control (IAC)valve. It's on the lower passenger side of the intake.
