Hey Phil and other port and polish dudes....

Okay now I'm in a bind. As you know I've been working on these heads. It's been like 3 weeks....4 hours a day....3 days a week. I'm almost finish and satisfied at the job so far. I took you advice Phil and didn't cut as much as I probably could but I didn't wanna "turn them into doorstops". None the less I'm pretty happy.

One HUGE problem. There is a spot in all the runners that I can't get too. The outter walls just before the bowl. There is nothing that can reach that far in. The bit that comes with the kit is too short and the sand paper rolls are also too short.

So this is what I did. I went to Home Depot and bought some sandpaper for a belt sander and cut them. With a lil epoxy I made my own extended rolls. It came out perfect..like the damn kits themselves. So I put them on the Die Grinder and at low r's it worked fine. The second I nailed it the roll flew off. I look down at the bit and it's bent at a 90 degree angle. Now I don't have a bit to hold the rolls and still have no clue how to get into that spot.

I know all of you have gotten there....how did you do it? This is very frustrating because other that this spot everything is going fine. I would really appreciate any suggestions besides take it too a shop. I've done a lot of work...learned a lot....and wanna finish it myself.

So if anything....thanks for just checking this out.

You can get a 6" burr to get in those hard to reach spots. You might could use a shorter bit. Powerhouse has tons of stuff like that.

They are out there. When I did mine, I bought my cutters from MSC. Or you could try Grainger. Not sure if they are in your area but try looking them up. I also made my own long arbor to use for the sanding scrolls. I'm sure if you look you will find those too.

Yeah.been looking all over. Looks like I'm gonna have to order a 6" mandrel from Standard Abrasives. Don't need the burr I'm done cutting. I just dont wanna risk it and cut too much into the roof and ruin the heads. I'm sure I wont geet good numbers or anything but it should be at least better than stock. I cut down the area around the guides mostly and evened out the roof. Just kinda smoothed everything else out abit. I just have no clue as to how much I can remove from the bowls.

I didn't mess with that area too much when I ported mine. I think if you were going for all out race then you would want to pay attention to it, but for a good home port and polish job I don't think there is any reason to worry about it. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong

what area was that?????? Did you get all the casting marks out of the runners?? Some look like they go pretty deep.

I'm talking about the hard to get to area on the back side of the bend where the runner goes around the pushrod. I got to it as much as I could with the tools I had(comparable to what you are working with) and left it at that.

Mmmm...

I reach everything I need to w/ an approximately 6" burr (I actually cut mine down a bit to reduce chatter) & the usual standard abrasives mandrels.

Spinning up unloaded/unbalanced stuff on a mandrel can be dangerous...

figured that out and also found out that I couldn't blast the die grinder at full 120 on the compressor. hahahah. oh well live and learn. I'm just glad I tested it outside the head.

Hey Phil....1 last question and I will never bother you again. How do you get the bowl area behind the guides. You know....If your looking down into the bowl with the intake runners going away from you? That small area.

Thanks.

Yeah I try.......I just can't find a bit that goes straight down and actually works with the tip of it.
