help with fuel pump? maybe something else

Hey guys, I've got big problems with my car....I think it's the fuel pump, but it's on and off...sometimes it will be ok, and the rest of the time it's horrible.....I get little to no throttle response whatsoever
it's at it's worst in town and at stop lights....that's where it always stalls out
I ordered a walbro 255lph fuel pump and I am ready to do the install but I wanted to wait and see if you guys knew of anything else it could be
Any wires to check? Could it be another pump or a sensor that's causing this? Anyone have these same problems.
When I'm on the highway at higher speeds the tacks just drops down over and over again and throttle response is bad there too. It feels like the fuel isn't getting to the engine. In town, when it drops way down at a stop light I can floor it and nothing will happen. It's bad.

If you have any advice at all please help. This is my only car and I currently travel anywhere from 150-300 miles per week for work and I'll be starting school again very soon and I commute 45-50 miles round trip per day.

Is the pump loud? You shouldn't be able to hear the stock pump. Mine did something similar for about 3 min one day then totally died. Its an easy install, cut the hole and be done with it.

could be the fuel pump... When you turn the key to the on position, do you hear the pump engage and build pressure? Could also be the ignition control module, they cause funny things like that to happen.. I would check the pressure coming from the fuel pump before I spent the time to replace it.

Did you check the fuel pressure before you went out and bought the new pump? Unless you know the pump can not supply the required pressure at idle and low loads, I'd be looking at other sources of the problem. A weak fuel pump will generally show up at high engine loads.

this problem gives me trouble on both ends....high and low.......I've been running through my list of options and I think I'm going to have a vacuum check done this week and have the fuel pressure tested....anything else you guys can think of that I can check myself. I've already cleaned the MAF and the plugs and wires are pretty new.

You're gona have them done?????? You gotta be kidding?? You have a 10 year old LT1 and you don't own a fuel pressure gage???? Much less a Mity-Vac brake bleeder for checking vacuum level.

Both of these items could be tested in minutes.

If you're gona keep an aged LT1, you better start stocking up on the right tools. A scanner is a must.

FWIW, there have been several folks on this bulletin board that have tried and been left stranded by Walbro pumps. I can't say if it was part or installation related but it's something you ought to think about.

You need to consider a beater to drive all the miles you're talking about with the price of gas near $3 per gallon. Something that gets around 30 miles per gallon. A 10yr old LT1 is not reliable enough.

Yeah, you should go ahead and get them. You will need them in the future
