Help Code: 36

I was driving home running bout 3500rpms, when suddenly my car jerked a couple of times, later on from taking off it jerked a couple more times but this time my rpm's went from 3500 to 2500 then right back to 3500 very quickly, this was accompanied by a check engine light, but the car ran fine afterward. So I park the car, and try to start it takes 10-15 seconds for it to start then jerks a couple of times then runs fine. Starting is the hard part. I pulled the code and it is Code 36: hi res fail. Upon searching I have noticed this is an opti signal...my opti isnt even a year old probably has 4k or so miles on it IF THAT. I dont want it to be crapped out already, but this is what the code is all about...correct? This will be my fourth opti in less than 2 yrs...I'm thinkin bout killin my car

Opinions???

No not really as bad, I had to drive my car a good three hours after it did it, and it never once tried to quit. Just hard starting and the porblem outlined above. Sounds like your may be the opti too....:-( Anyway I am thinkin that maybe if I keep on with my car without replacing my opti then I'll end up with the same problems as you. I'm currently searching for my receipt to Sam Taylor Buick because the opti has a one year replacement and mine isnt a year old yet...atleast I dont think so....

I just find it hard to believe that my distributor is bad already. It's only two months old...and was replaced to resolve the same problem that I have now.

Jeez...where's the quality control?

Re: Help Code: 36

believe it man, and get ready to drop some $$ on another opti. I had this code pop up on me a few times, it got gradually worse and happened more often, then eventually it would just kill the ignition all together and no spark because the PCM is not seeing the high resolution signals anymore. The "eye" in the opti is either blinded by contamination or the electrical side of it is just taking a crap. Check you plugs from the opti to the harness on the side of the intake, and the opti itself first of course to make sure no corrosion or loose pins and such, but more than likely you need a new opti. It will get worse, eventually leaving you in sneaker mode, until the car cools off, then you might be able to restart it a few times if yer as lucky as I was.

Re: Help Code: 36

Call jason at sam taylor and he can look you up in the computer. I am throwing that exact same code, my opti has 530 miles on it and is going out. I called jason and he just looked me up since i didn't have my receipt anymore. but yes code 36 is your opti and will need to be changed out, mine goes into the shop on thursday to have it changed out. Later.
