help! cannot get oil filter off
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
I run wix filters on mine. in july i was doing an oil change and the filter was really tight. when it did come loose it took the oil cooler extention with it. the extention came loose from the block after the clip holding it to the factory oil filter adapter broke. so be careful this doesnt happen. i just ended up removed my oil cooler assembly since i run redline.
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
Boy, does this thread bring back memories.
About 3 years ago, when i first got my car, i was doing the first oil change on it, and I got under it, and saw a Fram was on it, and i was dissapointed. Regardless, i went to take it off, and the strap started to crush it. IIRC, it crushed all the sudden at once. I then not knowing what to do, called my dad, he told me about hte screwdriver trick. I then got a 18" screwdriver, drove it through, the screwdriver was VERY thick. I went to twist it off and..... IT RIPPED THE FILTER IN HALF HORIZONTIALLY
I then had the top half of a filter at midnight in November with the wind blowing and it was about 10 degrees as my dad and I fought the filter for a couple of hours with chisels and other various tools. We couldn't get it off, and we had to have it towed to a shop, and it took them over an hour to get it off.
I now work at an auto parts store, and I HATE FRAM FILTERS so much. I'm almost to the point where i refuse to sell one. Anytime somebody sets one on the counter, I always try to talk them into a puralator. Usually .50 cheaper or so, and muuuuch better. It pisses me off when people dont want to listen to my facts/advice and want to get it anyway, or dont care. if your around the filters enough, you memorize what filter part number goes to what brand, etc and what part number goes with what engine, and Fram's numbers are the same as Advance Auto parts, STP's, Wal Mart's Super Tech, among others I don't know of/sell.
Best thing to do is go to Advance Auto parts and ask for a Powerflo filter (if its yoru daily/beater)They are like 1.58 or so, and are just a reboxed puralator
I'm a strong supporter of K+N, Delco,Mobil,Wix and Purolator filters.

Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
I have used Fram's/Delco's mixed around ever since I got my car, not problems after 30k miles. Knock on wood. I always fill my filters up with oil before I install em so that the car doesn't run without oil for as long, if at all. I do like the AC's the best though. Never tried the K&N before. They are to expensive for how much driving I do.
