help! cannot get oil filter off
i've been pushing as hard as i can and the thing is starting to crush. i'm moving it in the opposite direction (counter clockwise) wtf is going on?
am i turning in the wrong direction? the tighten arrows on the filter (FRAM) point clockwise so i'm lost???? i'm turning away from the tranny towards the front of the car.

Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
Are you using a strap wrench or your bare hands. Your going in the right direction, try using a oil filter wrench if you aren't already doing so. The problem with those Frams is that it is very easy to over-tighten them with that gripping that are on the bottom of the filter. Be more careful tightening and put a coat of oil or grease on the gasket next time.
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
drive a screwdriver through it and turn it with that if nothing else works..... AND DONT USE A FRAM FILTER!!! use AC Delco. Frams dont have that check valve in them and when u start your car it runs with no oil for a second which is bad
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
i'm using a strap wrench, but it still won't move. the bottom half of the filter is getting crushed. even the wrench is staring to bend. i always put a bed of oil on there but the car wasn't driven in over year and this thing refuses to come loose. getting nervous with the filter crushing.
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
You can try a small chisil at the base, just dont mess up the base.Or,as mentioned before, poke a screwdriver thru it at the top...you are putting a new one on anyhow.
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
got it off....jammed a thick screwdriver in through it and slipped a pipe over the handle for leverage. what son of a bitch!!! i cannot understand how that got so fused on there. last oil change i did was jul 05, but i've only driven like 1,000 miles since. anyway thanks for the help guys.
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
In my earlier ignorance, I put a FRAM oil filter on my LT1. I had the same difficult time removing it.... same results as you had. I've been changing oil filters for 40 years, and never had a problem like that. When I finally got it off, the threads in the FRAM were so poorly cut that they had galled on the filter adapter mounting threads.
After that experience, a couple earlier leaks with FRAM's and the online comparison that shows that the FRAM is really a piece of junk with cardboard ends held together with string, I never bought another one.

Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
The only thing that the black grip stuff is good for on those filters is exactly the problem you had. When I was a mechanic, EVERY Fram filter with the black grip stuff was over tightened. Some people have a tendency to over tighten filters, it's really easy to do with those filters.
Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
I jammed a screw driver through a fram once after crushing it and the bottom 3/4 sheared off with a breaker bar. Same gauled threads as Injuneer mentioned. Never again went with the fram and I have never had the problem again.

Re: help! cannot get oil filter off
For those of you guys going anywhere using Quaker State or Pennzoil filters (Speed Lube and Jiffy Lube being the two biggest chains prolly)....Those used to be Fram filter internals.
I am pretty sure they still are, but since my shop switched from Quaker state filters, I can't confirm that anymore.
Just a little FYI
