Help build my LT1 (going in faster than planned)

Hey guys i go to a local career center by me but i am in the body work instead of the engines but they will put together my LT1 for free i just need to buy the parts!
So i have a 96 impala ss LT1 complete. I am wanting to make 275rwhp or more. Would like to rebuild not sure what i should go with. Then something like the Hot cam kit? Then headers with exshaust. Also a 3000 stall.
Would like to do this cheap i am doing football and track where i cant work alot and get alot of money. SO any fast easy cheap ways of getting me up high like that would be great!
Also have a cold air intake for it (came with motor)

My car: 1990 camaro rs
3:73 posi
700r4 w/ high performance shift kit and corvette servo

thanks
kevin

You're setting the bar VERY low with 275whp. That's a HP number for a mild bolt-on car. What is your budget?

275RWHP is quite low as stated above, what is your budget? A bolt on Hot-cam LT1 will dyno more than that.

We need to really know your budget in order to help

i dont really have one besides cheap as possible! I am coming from a 305tbi car that has like 155rwhp lol. I am sick of it! Like to do a cheap rebuild, bigger cam, 3000 stall heard they were fun, with exshaust. I know its not like big time hp but i think it would make my car move. Would love to hit into the 12's.
thanks

A set of good flowing heads and a cam would be nice start. This is going to cost around $2000 for quality ones.

or build within your budget with quality parts and be satisfied, not everyone wants a 400+ rwhp car

coming from a 305 tbi (I have a 305tpi) a stock LT1 will feel like a rocketship, let alone a full bolt-on cammed one

I'd say an LE custom grind or cc503 with supporting mods will make more than enough power for your goals, fit nicely into a budget, and deliver decent gas mileage/driveability. also the stock bottom end is quite capable for your goals so a basic rebuild with re-ring, hone, etc will work.

he's a poor college student with a modest power goal, no reason to try to drink wine on a beer budget imo or you will be stuck with a pile of parts and a lack of funds to finish it.

If you can still find one my vote goes for the Crane 227. This is a great all around cam and will give you a very nicely powered, great sounding LT1. A buddy of mine had an 847 in his car and something happened to that motor, I don't remember, so he built another motor with the 227 and absolutely loves it. Of course I think one of his reasons for stepping down on the cam was the fact that he has so many other "toys" and decided to make the Camaro "stockish" again.

I hear alot about the Hot cam, 503cc, and the crane 227. If they are all around the same price? What would make more power?

I think what i want is:
a basic rebuild
headers/ y-pipe
3000 stall
cam???

Now should i look around for like used headers and parts? Or would it be better to buy everything new?

And yes i had a 305tbi going from that to this is basically adding 2x as much power. I think i should be in the low 13's?
thanks

You mentioned you would like to see high 12's or low 13's. I would like to see what a stock 96 impala ss LT1 in your car with gears, cam, stall and exhaust only would run. Stock 96 SS Impala's run 15.6 1/4 mile. I don't think they had aluminum heads and that extra weight would not help.

The Impala isn't slow because of the iron heads.... the typcial race weight is around 4,300#, and only a small part of that is the heads. The better flow of the iron heads may even offset the weight penalty.

Well see i figured with a cam and 3000 stall would hopefully put me around 300rwhp and i think that should be good enough for low 13's?

300 horsepower for a Camaro will do around 13.5-13.7 depending upon traction and a few other things. If you get there you should be very happy with your car.
