I'd say an LE custom grind or cc503 with supporting mods will make more than enough power for your goals, fit nicely into a budget, and deliver decent gas mileage/driveability. also the stock bottom end is quite capable for your goals so a basic rebuild with re-ring, hone, etc will work.

he's a poor college student with a modest power goal, no reason to try to drink wine on a beer budget imo or you will be stuck with a pile of parts and a lack of funds to finish it.
True, not everyone wants a 400+rwhp car NOW, but I will assure you the LT1 stock does not feel like a rocketship when you see someone's tail lights. However, keeping budget in mind because almost everyone is on a budget (obviously) you can have a 400+ rwhp car on a budget, people do it with H/C and supporting mods all the time, I think its a matter of how he spends it. If he goes cam now maybe he can get heads down the road. Treat it like a work in progress but still drive it.

If he never wants to expand (or feels he wants to do this twice) then a simple rebuild with all bolt on's will do the trick, adding a cam will give it way more oomph than 275whp. So he will easily overshoot his goal and be pleasantly surprised.

Ya i think most of you get what i am doing! I would love to have a 500 or even 600 hp car but i think for now that will be fine.

Big question still: Hot cam, 503cc, crane 227??

Then if people are making a good 300rwhp-330rwhp that i have seen alot now i will only be at 13.7-13.5? I thought with that hp and 3:73s and a 3000 stall would push me alittle more down? Mabey not idk.

thanks

Nobody can pick a cam for you the best thing to do is search the HC,503,227.
I am about 100% sure there are dyno sheets and track times on all of them on here. Atleast thats what I did and ended up with the cc503.

Depending on your budget and mileage on the donor engine I would do as much of the following as possible:

-Piston ring and gasket kit
-CAI
-Headers
-Hotcam Kit
-Mail order tune
-Stall selected according to how many options you listed above.

This is assuming the rest of the car is ready for it (i.e. suspension, cat-back, tranny, etc.)

I really dont know the millage of the engine. But what i do know that it has new gaskets on the oil pan, timing cover, water pump, and mabey the valve covers.
I would like to do a complete rebuild to be safe but it is alot of money.
It came with a nice cold air intake from arizona speed and marine!

My suspension is not the best but dose ok. I have 36mm front sway bar 24 mm in the back. I put on a wonder bar also.

Rear end is a 10 bolt with 3:73s

Trans is a 700r4 with high performance shift kit and corvette servo.

What is a mail order tune? Is it very much money? Is it worth it?

thanks

You'll need to do springs when your in there for the Cam as well, I'd go with some comp Bee hives. And do some Comp Promag rockers. Best money I spent on my build to be honest!

Yes i really want to switch the springs out and go with 1.6r. This guy said he would sell me this cam? Is it as good as the hot cam and the crane227? It dosent seem like it would make as much power and i know it dosent rev as high as the other cams?

Have a Crane Power Max Lift 454/440 Duration270/276 w less than 10K on it. Out of 305 LB9. Jegs pat#270-114132. Designed for car w/ 3.73's,
1600-5400rpm range. W/ 1.6 would put lift around 494/480....$100 shipped

thanks

If you are going to buy ported heads, you have opened up a whole new discussin. CC503, hotcam etc. Will not be "enough" to compliment the heads. Yes you will gain power but not optimal.

thanks

When you received the motor, did you get the computer with it? I don't think you will be able to just swap motors without changing the wire harness and computer.

I would definately let the shop (or shcool I can't remember who you said was doing the work) give the engine a once over to make sure that it is worthy of spending any money on. Do you already have the external bolt-ons to accentuate any internal upgrades? Things like headers and a cat back exhaust should be on your list before a head or cam upgrade. If you do have these items already and depending on your budget then upgrades from the Hotcam kit (includes the cam, springs, rockers, etc.) which retails for somewhere around $500 to a Lloyd Elliot or Advanced Induction head and cam package. Those will run closer to the $2000 range. Regardless of what you get you'll need to figure in the prices of misc. things like gaskets, fluids, etc. Search the site vendors and determine what to go with. I highly recommend that if you do go with heads as well as a cam, you need to get a nicely matched package.

As for mail order tunes, whatever you do to the car you are going to want to maximize its potential. If you have a laptop then you can get a cable online and send your specs to any number of tuners to have a proper calibration sent to you. While it may not be as good as a dyno tune it is far cheaper and worthwhile. Especially on a budget. A tune is a must if you are changing the heads or the cam. Once again the supporting vendors should give you some insight.
