Just got back from the track friday and ran a 15.1 @ 93mph. There is a little bit of smoke comming from the left side of the motor could it be the cats?? would that cause the smoking and bad performance?? Please help!!

its a 97 with 99,000 miles its an a4 everything is stock eccpet the air filter k&n on it when i bought the car

Check Shift plate
(if it is a 2.73 car the shifter will look like this: (blank) 2 D OD N R P, if its a 3.23 it will look like this 1 2 D OD N R P)

shift plate is the thing that says 1,2,3,d or blank 2, d , od. Tells what gear your in

 

your gearshift indicator...does it have a place for you to shift into first gear, or does it only allow you to move the shifter into 2nd gear?
you may just need a tune up, has it ever had one?
my car has 2.73's and it ran some crappy ET's when it was hot out but the MPH never dropped below 96.6mph.

 

yeah its 2 3 d n r p so its 2.73 but the ones with 2.73 couldnt have been that slow

 

could it be my cats???

 

i know a guys who had an LS1 trans am and both his cats went bad. that car ran like crap until he got new cats put on it. i never can afford to take my car to the dealership but if you can afford it, i'd recommend having them run diagnostics on it and let you know what it is. that problem could be so many things, it will save you much time if you do it that way. after they tell you what's wrong with it then maybe you can fix it yourself.
does it seem to run ok? obviously the track times aren't good, but does it run smooth?

 

yeah runs great no check engine light but it is sluggish on the low end my 0-60 ft times were 2.3's. and i know that exhaust has alot to do with torque so i just figured it might be the cats cause it has so many miles on it.

 

yeah those are terrible 60' times. i've always thought a low RPM stumble could screw up your 60'. sometimes i thought i could sense a miss around 1300RPM's which is close to wear i launch from. whenever i felt that miss, the car would have 2.24-2.29 60's but when it didn't miss, i put down some low 2.1's. again, i'd just take it to a good Chevy garage and have them check it out.

 

It could be your cats. My cat is messed up. My car has like 119,000 miles on it. My car, I can smell gas. And it feels like it pulses when I floor it because the air is trying to get through but it can't.
