Header bolt fell out!

So one of my middle header bolts fell out and I drove the car for about 10-15km. I think it's a fiberglass gasket. I put the header bolt back in, and it still sounds like an exhaust leak. Did it maybe burn the gasket up while it was loose? Also number one Cyclinder header bolts were loose aswell.

Re: Header bolt fell out!

I would replace the header bolts when you replace the gasket

Re: Header bolt fell out!

you probably burnt the gasket. just replace it. You need to re-torque header bolts after a few heat cycles of initial install......and not a bad idea to check them periodically

Re: Header bolt fell out!

If you put a bit of teflon tape around the threads they won't back out quite as easily.

Re: Header bolt fell out!

Use good gaskets (Fel-Pro 1406) and good bolts (ARP) to minimize the problems. The stuff that comes with a set of headers is usually poor quality.

1404 are the standard SBC port shape, the 1406 are the D shaped port shape that your engine has. They'll bolt up but I think there will be gasket material sticking into the port. Why not get the right ones?
