Guy who have disabled the knock sensor - daily drivers?

Anyone disable the knock sensor (via pcm or physically grounding it out) and daily drive their car?

Any issues? Anyone have any detonation related problems whatsoever?

Just trying to get an idea if this is something I wanna do 24/7, or only when pushing it.

Mine's been disabled for two seasons. Not a "daily driver", but I have put 8,000mi on over the two seasons. However, it's been very carefully tuned and I always run the same fuel. No evidence of damage from detonation on the teardown this winter, even with boost + spray at the track.

With proper tuning you can get away with it. If your car has been dyno tuned and you know your fuel/timing curve is correct then disabling it should not be a problem.

I am about to run 10 gallons of 104test through the engine to triple check and make sure the knock is false before I make a trip to the dyno. I have a switch wired up to bypass it or keep it on, but have debated whether I should leave it on during a long roadtrip or something.

Thanks for the info. This kinda reaffirms what I supsected: if I know know the tune (wideband) is there I should be ok. But at the same time Ineed to keep an eye and an ear peeled!

Daily driver, 12-13k miles a year. Couldnt get the car to stop picking up flase knock fromt he cam, so i took it out in the program. Always use 93 or 94 octane, and pay attention to what the car feels like it is doing. If i think there is a problem i log and diagnose from there.

Red,

There could be other problems such as hot spots on his heads/pistons. If the AFR is correct and the timing curve is also, couldn't he still get knock?

I too am wrestling with the same issue of what I believe to be false knock. I took out 30% of my timing across the board with no results as well as adding in racing fuel that put my octane to somewhere over 98. Nothing has eliminated it.

However, if for some reason it is knock (hot spots) then I could damage the engine with prologed elimination of my retard.

Ben: You should see ZERO knock retard with race gas. I ran about 6-8 gallons of 104 unleaded on an empty tank to remove all doubt.

Ryan,

I tend to agree with you, because I have no reason to believe I have hot spots.

Since I have wideband tuned also, I know I am running good and rich (12.5:1 AFR currently) across the RPM band. I guess I could even be more safe and go to 12.2:1.

However, it just bug the poop out of me why I have so much knock (false?)
