Great day for the LT1 (dyno day)...

Well, my little brother took his 96 Z28 out to a local dyno day today. First off, here is what his car has...

96Z 106K miles
Stage 1 heads
LT4 Hotcam Kit
Hooker Longtubes
Offroad Ypipe
K&N FIPK
CSI H20 Pump
race built tranny
2500rpm stall
pcm4less tuning

His numbers were:
340.8rwhp
332.9rwtq

Now this shop here in Dallas is a predominately LS1 shop. Get this ****, the guys who ran the shop put his car on the dyno (above ground) and took it through the first pull. The guy inside the car had a ****-eatin grin on his face and was very inquisitive as to what the car had. Ran it the second time and got the numbers above, but the car started leaning out bad at 6200rpms. The thing is, the car was still pulling VERY hard up until they shut down because of the leaness. Last pull was a little lower (heatsoak), but the guys at this shop were extremely impressed. They told us that after 6 hours of dynoing LS1/LS6 cars that his Z28 was the "Most IMPRESSIVE car BY FAR". This is after they had just dynoed a 500rwhp ZO6. They were very interested in track times and said that they can never remember a LT1 with auto and stall ever pulling those numbers like that with the limited amount of mods (obviously heads/cam but very small ones).

Moral of story is: Dont take the LT1 lightly. It was really cool hearing a REAL engine on that dyno singing at 6200rpms. All those LS1 guys were crowding the computer display and giving a ton of respect to us.

Me too. I have this burning desire now to mod the car to the moon. I am about to buy a stall (3000), 3.73 gears, drag radials and a 100 shot.

Do you guys think that will solve his lean condition? Bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, and a dyno tune???

whats your little brothers screen name? does he post on here? was his heads/cam done here in Wichita Falls? reason i'm asking is my brother in law (smoke t/a) has done a few heads/cam swaps for some people lately and I'm just wondering if that was one of the ones he did. great numbers by the way. usually mail orders are pig rich on the top end. he just needs to play with the timing and fuel curve a bit to get it straightened out. may want to check out the injectors though and watch the fuel pressure on a few wot runs.

Mike

As a matter of fact, joe did do his heads/cam install. his screen name on here is snakeatinZ. The heads joe ported make a lot of power.
We are going to check the fuel pressure. I have to put a new one in my 94 TA, so we will use my fuel pressure guage and check his car out.

In response to got_hp? reply, what the hell are you talking about. I never said that the car had the highest dyno numbers, nor did I say it would walk any of the high hp LS1s there. I simply stated that the owners of the shop were very impressed with what the Lt1 car put down. You say that his numbers aren't impressive and that LS1 cars get mid 300s on boltons. Well lets consider that this LT1 started off with like what 245-250rwhp STOCK. So this car has gained 90rwhp (even higher without the torque converter) with full exhaust, a BABy cam, and cleaned up heads. Now most automatic LS1 cars dyno 290 rwhp STOCK. With full exhaust, a small (not high lift) cam and cleaned up heads dyno what, maybe 360rwhp. So they only pick up like 70rwhp with the same mods. Maybe this is why the owners of the shop were impressed. get a clue before you make ignorant replies.

That lt1 must sound mean as hell! I love how a somewhat modern car can still have that evil muscle car exhaust note

The crazy thing is though you can just put bolt on's on a LS1 car and make close to the same hp he made with bolt on's, cam, and some headwork.

Good numbers though. I should be right around 340RWHP the way my car sits now.
