got the cable....but i have another problem...laptop doesnt see pcm

well i bought the cable for doing the scanning and programing but i have a problem. i dont have a serial port on my laptop, so i talked to andrew at akmcables and he said to get a usb to serial adapter. so i did but it does not work, the laptop doesnt see the pcm. so my question has anyone had this problem, if so how did you fix it, and what did you use

if anyone knows a fix for this please help.

i tried freescan and datamaster but neither works i think its the adapter anyone have any other suggestions.

Alright, this is what I was told to do by Steve Ruse, another cable guy. It works for the serial port, but it should for USB too.

On the cable where the convertor box is...unplug the parallel from it...you want the part that goes to the computer...plug it in...open Hyperterminal in Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications...make a new connection and make the settings these: Connect through USB port, baud 9600, i dont know what the settings are called but the rest should be 8-N-1 see if you can figure that part out, i think the N is no stop bits. Alright that should be it for that, now click connect or finish or whatever it says. Then find prongs 2 and 3 on the parallel adapter, short them, connect them together with something metallic. 2 and 3 are in order from the top left. Now while they are shorted type something, anything, in hyperterminal, and whatever you are typing should get relayed back to the computer, if it does you are communicating fine up to the convertor. now short the same prongs on the convertor with it plugged in, it will relay the same thing back also. Try that, if that doesnt work your convertor is bad. Try emailing steveruse@wotelectronics.com he sent me all these tests.

Question

Maybe a dumb question.. but did you change to an ODB1 PCM?

If not, then those programs will not work on a '97 ODBII PCM.

www.akmcables.com i bought one that is y shaped so i can do obd1 or obd2. andrew is a good guy. and very knowlegdable. i can him and he siad he would look at my laptop and see what he could do. i have to meet him friday so he can look at it.

im not going to say what he sold it to me for becuase we worked a deal because he didnt have to ship it. i went ot his house to pick it up.

im going to go home and try my home pc (tote it out to the garage) and make sure its that usb to serail cable that is giving me a probelm. im not that computer literate but if i could just get it going id be ok. i really need to look at the knock count and knock retard.

the cam is not in yet. i have to get some welding done on the heads, and hten clean the welds up. and take them to loyd and have them flowed, them the heads and cam, and longtubes will go in all at once. . im looking foward to it.
