Going to rebuild my 96 LT1

I am going to pull my engine from my 96 ss M6 and gonna rebuild it and do some upgrades. I don't think Im going to do a stroker but I'd like to do camshaft, rockers, port heads and intake, throttle body upgrade. My questions are... What do I need to do as far as machining? Bore the block? Deck heads? intake? have the shop check the crank shaft? If anyone could give me some advice here I'd appreciate it. Im also having the trans rebuilt so I'll be dropping it out first then using a happy hooker hoist to pull the motor from the top.

Find a GOOD reputable machine shop then discuss machining options with them. They will know exactly what to do and will be happy to discuss pricing.

What are your end HP/ET goals? Have you done any parts selection? Why are you rebuilding in the first place? Is your current bottom end toast?

There's a really great book on rebuilding the LT1 engine:

Well I've been going back and forth on the idea of rebuilding for awhile. I got the car off Ebay about a year ago and had to put on a new opti a new water pump, new spark plug wires, new axle seals and brakes. I finally drove the car couple nights ago and it went fine till the oil thinned out and I got some major rocker arm noise and the rear main seal is spewing. Plus my t56 won't go into 2nd unless i go to 1st then to 2nd. I kinda like the peace of mind of having a rebuilt motor. As far as end goals. I'd like to have over 350 horse 400 would be awesome but not sure how in depth I would have to get. I've had lifted trucks my whole life so i'm sure a 350 horse 3500 pound car will be just fine for me

Drop the engine from the bottom instead of pulling it.. Just my opinion.

Why go 383? Unless something exploded I'd rather reuse the factory bottom end with a few small fixes and build a real nice 355. I'm building a mild 355 for my daily driver car, should be 425-450hp at the crank and I see no reason to add cubes.

Hope this helps, I should amend this with more info since the build is done.

Great info man thanks. I'll definitely be doin a 355. Don't feel like shellin out a ton of cash for a forged crank.

Is it a ton easier? Never pulled an engine out of a car before. Would it be possible to pull it out the bottom in a garage at home? No lift or anything.

Re: Going to rebuild my 96 LT1

There are several threads discussing engine removal, with links to procedures for dropping the engine out the bottom. Here's a couple links:

This. Make sure you're not getting half-measures like knurled guides and imported cheapo parts. You want the block to be torque plate honed, decked, line honed if needed, the crank should be sized and checked for straightness, heads should be fully rebuilt with new parts and a performance 5 angle/radius valve job.
