Fuel system questions
Fuel system questions
I am about ready to pull my pump and assembly out of my car. The car is extremely hard starting and I have checked everything else. When I hook up a fuel gauge, the pressure goes up to 40 when its primed, then it drops to 0 as soon as the pump shuts off. I don't think it would be the pump since its an almost new pump. Could it be one of the fuel lines that goes to the pump, maybe its not connected right??? Any help of pics of the fuel system would help. Thanks
Re: Fuel system questions
The fuel pump has a check valve built into it to retain fuel pressure after the pump primes. The check valve could be stuck open due to dirt. Your problem may be solved by cleaning the check valve. Do a search, I believe Racetronix provided a cleaning procedure.
Re: Fuel system questions
There are three possible problems that cause the fuel pressure to drop immeidately when the pump shuts off. Each of those could make it harder to start the car:
1. The check valve in the fuel pump is bad, as mentioned in a post above. Seems like some of the new pumps of a certain brand frequently suffer from this problem. This is the hardest to track down.
2. Leaking diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum line off the FPR and look for liquid fuel or strong smell of fuel.
3. Leaking injectors flood the engine. Pull the fuel rails up with the injectors intact. Turn the key on the pressurize the rails (don't try to start it) and look for drips from the injectors.
Hard starting can also be related to a fualty coolant temp sensor - the one in the water pump housing that feeds the PCM.

So if it is the check valve in the pump, do I need a new one or can I just clean this one????

If it was the faulty coolant temp sensor then why is the fuel pressure dropping soo fast????
Re: Fuel system questions
OH ok, gotcha. Well I know its hard starting because of hte fuel pressure. When I crank on it it will build pressure and as soon as it hits 40 PSI it starts. So how should I check the injectors??? As Is there a way to check the check valve on the pump when I take it out of the tank??

Really frustrating when someone takes time to give you as complete an answer as possible, and then you don't even bother to read it.
