Fuel system questions

I am about ready to pull my pump and assembly out of my car. The car is extremely hard starting and I have checked everything else. When I hook up a fuel gauge, the pressure goes up to 40 when its primed, then it drops to 0 as soon as the pump shuts off. I don't think it would be the pump since its an almost new pump. Could it be one of the fuel lines that goes to the pump, maybe its not connected right??? Any help of pics of the fuel system would help. Thanks

Re: Fuel system questions

The fuel pump has a check valve built into it to retain fuel pressure after the pump primes. The check valve could be stuck open due to dirt. Your problem may be solved by cleaning the check valve. Do a search, I believe Racetronix provided a cleaning procedure.

Re: Fuel system questions

There are three possible problems that cause the fuel pressure to drop immeidately when the pump shuts off. Each of those could make it harder to start the car:

1. The check valve in the fuel pump is bad, as mentioned in a post above. Seems like some of the new pumps of a certain brand frequently suffer from this problem. This is the hardest to track down.

2. Leaking diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum line off the FPR and look for liquid fuel or strong smell of fuel.

3. Leaking injectors flood the engine. Pull the fuel rails up with the injectors intact. Turn the key on the pressurize the rails (don't try to start it) and look for drips from the injectors.

Hard starting can also be related to a fualty coolant temp sensor - the one in the water pump housing that feeds the PCM.

I already replaced the FPR so it's not that. I thought it was the injectors but someone said that they wouldn't bleed off that fast, if anything it would slowly bleed off. If it was the faulty coolant temp sensor then why is the fuel pressure dropping soo fast????

So if it is the check valve in the pump, do I need a new one or can I just clean this one????

If the injectors leak, the pressure will drop. Fuel in an incompressible liquid... if you lose a few drops the pressure will drop.

I didn't say that the coolant sensor was related to the fuel pressure dropping. If I had, I would have listed it as a 4th cause. I'm just pointing out a common problem related to hard starting.

Re: Fuel system questions

OH ok, gotcha. Well I know its hard starting because of hte fuel pressure. When I crank on it it will build pressure and as soon as it hits 40 PSI it starts. So how should I check the injectors??? As Is there a way to check the check valve on the pump when I take it out of the tank??

Did you read what I typed for item #3 in my post above? You quoted the post. Did you not read it?

Really frustrating when someone takes time to give you as complete an answer as possible, and then you don't even bother to read it.

Chill dude, I skipped over it by accident. Before you get your panties in a twist just take a deep breath.

Re: Fuel system questions

Earlier in the thread someone said they had a write up on how to clean the check valve, any links to that???

Checked the injectors. NOT it. They were not leaking one bit. Fuel pump I'm guessing??? Any one have a write up on how to rebuild one????
