Fuel pump failing?
Fuel pump failing?
Car's been sitting for over a year with a startup once or twice a month, stabil was added to the gas. Last night I took the car for a spin, got back and shut it down. Went to start it a few minutes later and nothing from the fp with ign. on. Turned over fine, just didn't start. Today the car started fine, fp whine and all. No sign of gas in reg. vac line, but I have not checked fuel pressure or pulled codes yet. SES is on d/t egr delete. In the past year the car has shut off randomly at startup - no stumbling nothing, just a startup and then off like as if the ign. was turned off. This did not happen often and when it did the car started right up. The car is very stock and runs real strong, opened it up on a strait and pulled hard.
** also it was running rich on the road, gas smell and light smoke from the exhaust when I pulled over to have a look, nothing like that today when it was idling in the garage though

Re: Fuel pump failing?
Sure sounds like fuel pump. Mine died and I was able to start three times after it died each time on me. Got it home and never started again. Unless something electrical is bad on the way to the pump, my guess is its bad.

The engine won't just shut off at idle if your pump stops. It'll sputter for a short bit and die as fuel is slowly consumed and the fuel trims go haywire. See if you're getting a low res opti failure code or something, this will instantly kill the ignition and can random 'fix' itself. I think the code might reset itself if the car starts successfully or you cycle the ignition key, so you might need to take the scanner with you.
