Fuel pump crapping out?

I just put my 396 in two weeks ago and I am still working out the bugs. Anyway, It has been taking two tries sometimes to crank the car, now it won't crank at all. I have tested the ignition system already so I think its the fuel pump. I put a fuel pressure test guage on the schraeder valve and when you turn the key on it goes up to a little over 40psi, then drops off fast, so when I go ahead and try to crank it there is practically no pressure at all. Has anybody had this happen?

Maybe leaky injector? Bad fuel pump check valve? FPR? Whats your reading at idle?

Do not have a fpr. Will not crank so I can't check idle pressure. Where is the fuel pump check valve?

I can hear my pump turn on when I put the key ion the "on" position. Mine is set at 47 pounds per Ed Wright's recommendation for my combination. It could also be the fuel pump relay which is located to the left of your ebrake behind the kick panel. The relay is much easier and cheaper to replace than the fuel pump.

To be sure it's the pump I would use the fuel pump prime connector, which allows you to have constant juice to the pump so you can check the continuous pressure that it is putting out. Once you rule out the pump, you can move to other things

when i turn the key on I can hear it prime. after it stops priming, pressure drops rapidly. My starter is working. Where are the fuel pump check valve and fuel pump prime connector located?

tnthub-- would it prime at all if my relay were bad?

Thanks

Prime Connector

Compliments of shoeboxes tech page.

The check valve is back by the pump I believe. If you are loosing pressure after the pump is primed you either have a leaky injector or a bad check valve, or a fuel line is cracked somewhere.

the pressure drops very quickly after it primes. a leaky injector would take more time for the pressure to drop, wouldn't it? And if the check valve is bad, I need to replace the whole pump, or can I just replace the check valve?

Thanks for all the help

Thanks
i think that 93-95s fuel prime connector gave juice directly to pump, but after that in 96 and on it went through the relay. maybe someone else can confirm this

There is an internal check ball valve in the fuel pump. If it malfunctions it will cause a loss in pressure.

I think this is what's messed up on my car. It runs great, dynoed fine, has been doing this for almost a yr now: When colder it will take two tries to crank. When it does crank, it's a perfect shot, but only it's not the FIRST try.

Would this be the check valve losing pressure in the lines? And does this require the replacement of the whole pump, or just this valve?

Thanks for the help and I hope you get your car started soon!

Kyle
