The fuel pump access door "mod" is....

Great! I just finished replacing my fuel pump by cutting the hole in the hatch floor and it went pretty smoothly... I thought about going the drop the rear, exhaust, etc. route but it seemed too time consuming and I needed my car later today... If I had an SS, show car, or some rare Camaro I would have gone the drop the tank way, but for my daily driver Z28 this was an easy alternative.

I thought I'd add my tips for people doing searches like I did:

-You may need to cut the hole a couple inches over on the front drivers side to reach the one line that's tucked under there.

-If you want to remove the pump from the car and set it on a bench or whatever, you'll need to get under the car and unplug wiring harness... It's in the area of the drivers rear seat under the car.. There are two plugs, blue and white... It's the bottom white plug... Mine had a factory sticker that had '***' on it. Whatever that stands for.

-The fuel pump assembly isn't straight and doesn't sit vertical in the tank... So you can't just pull it straight up and out... It's straight for a few inches from the top but turns at about a 45 degree angle leaning towards the rear of the car... It's on a spring loaded hinge and can move somewhat more at an angle up, but not vertical... So keep in mind the angle when you're trying to remove it.

-As I was pulling mine out, it got hung up on the clear ribbed plastic tube... Because of the length, the tube loops around so you may need to reach in and move that tube in order to get the pump assembly out.

-Be careful of the yellow float level which sticks out at the bottom on the passenger side of the pump assembly... You'll have to tilt the whole pump assy. in order for it to come out without hitting or bending it.

These may seem like common sense tips, but they would have helped me if I knew these beforehand... Here are the links below I looked through before replacing the pump... Hopefully this will help someone in the future... If anyone else has any tips toss them in.

I was pressed for time and couldn't wait to order a pump, so unfortunately I ended up getting a stock one... But it would be simple enough to swap it out for an aftermarket one which I'll probably end up doing further down the road.

I went with the racetronix setup. Cheaper and better than stock. Realitively plug and play.
