fuel pressure question

my car is running porrly, 1995 TA with a 6 speed. I bought the car not running and replaced the coil and the thing flats gets up and goes, then the other week I find out that the gas gauge is way off, and run out of gas. Well the car hasn't run right since then. I put in a new fuel pump because the symptoms made me believe it was going bad, here's whats happening:

The car doesn't fire right up like it used to, takes some cranking now.

When I turn the key to acc the pump primes to like 28-32 psi then bleeds immediately to 0 PSI. I thought it should, and would, stay at full PSI until I started the vehicle?

I here it prime followed by what sounds like gas bublling back into the tank, really wierd.

I'm thinking the fuel pressure regulator gave up the ghost, I don't see any (new) ignition wires touching the headers and have found no indication of arching at night under the hood.

When I start the vehicle the PSI jumps to the 30's and stays there, but I'm wondering if the injectors are getting fed all they need.

Now this all might be working as normal, but it sure doesn't seem right too me, I was under the impression the fuel rail should stay pressurized all the time, but even more so when the key is on. Any help on this would be appreciated, I've searched quite a bit, and have read of O2 sensors, Optis, cats, temp sensors, torn intake boots, and so on, but I definitely think this is an issue whether or not it is my main cause or not.

Thanks,

Re: fuel pressure question

You are correct. Fuel pressure should be maintained for some time after the ignition is turned off. You still have an issue with your fuel system. I would suspect the regulator....

Re: fuel pressure question

I'm hoping thats all it is, that car was a freaking bullet when I first got her going.

Anyone got any recommendations on a good aftermarket fuel pressure regulator, I would also buy from a board supporter.

Thanks,
Patrick

Here's a link to a good trouble shooting guide on Shoebox's site:

Re: fuel pressure question

well I tried a new pressure regulator, that was not it. I know the fuel system has the issue, just need to narrow down where the problem is. It's got to be leaking back to the tank or to thru the injectors. I think it will actually be easier for me to pull the injector rails before pulling the spark plugs, so I'm going to test those this weekend. I don't know how folks change out their plugs on the passenger side, sweet jesus its tight in there.

thanks for all the recommendations.
