fuel pressure?

I tested my fuel pressure today.
It starts of at about 38-39 psi, and
gradually drops down to 16, this is over
a 10 min. time span. Just want to know if this
is normal. I don't have a long enough hose
to attach it to the windshield to test it under load.

Re: fuel pressure?

At idle fuel pressure should be constant. My guess would be a dying fuel pump. Under heavy load I have seen fuel pressure drop below nominal on forced induction cars where the pump cant keep up with the demand. Good luck fuel pump replacements are fun!

Re: fuel pressure?

How did you measure it? At idle with the engine running, or did you just turn the key to "on" so the pump ran for a couple of seconds and pressurized the system?

Re: fuel pressure?

I test it with the system pressurized as well
as at idle. During ideal it stays constant at 38-39 psi.
Under pressure (key in the on position) it drops gradually.

Re: fuel pressure?

Can someone help me, this is a new motor and
I don't want to destroy it. I am currently getting
8 mpg and gas in the oil. I checked the injectors
with the fuel rail off, got to many inconsitent results.
Injectors would either pop off or there did seem to
be a leak. I will check them again today.

Re: fuel pressure?

The leakdown when you tested "key on/engine off" may cause hard starting, but its not going to make it run rich.

Your fuel pressure at idle appears to be normal, or maybe a little on the high side. I'll assume you measured that with the vacuum line still connected. You need to remove the vacuum line, and look for 41-47psi at idle. When you reconnect the vacuum line, the pressure should drop about 5psi with the HOT cam. Then take it out on the road, and at WOT/max rpm it should hold withing 1 or 2 psi of the "no vacuum" reading. While you have the vacuum line off the FPR, see if it has any signs of fuel in it.

Appears you decided to leave the retainer clips off the injectors... might want to put some on, at least while you check for leaking injectors.

You might want to detail your problem more fully. Appears you feel its running rich. What have you checked so far? Have you had it scanned, to look for elevated long term fuel corrections? Have you looked for the "usual suspects".... exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors and misfires? Have you discussed the problem with the programmer? Have you checked the O2 sensors?
