Friggin T56... Going TH400 What all is involved?

Well I threw a driveshaft after just getting my Z out of storage. It put a hole in the floor between the rear seats, and busted the case on my T56.
This will have been my 2nd T56 and on my 4th clutch and the price of a replacement T56 is outrageous. Since I will need a new driveshaft, and I already have a TH400 attached to a 454 I have sitting in the shed, I am seriously considering it as an option.

Questions I have.

1. Will a stock 4L60 flywheel work?

2. I know I will eventually need a different convertor, but will the stock TH400 convertor work and attach to the 4L60 flywheel till a aftermarket TQ convertor can be found?

3. For a speedo, I hear you can tap into the ABS sensor or somthing?

4. Anyone have the driveshaft measurements?

5. Does the TH400 fit into the tunnel with out any massaging?

Anymore advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

You are aware, I assume that this post is going to be moved to the "Drivetrain" forum, where it should have been posted??

1. Will a stock 4L60 flywheel work?

Just get an SFI-rated SBC Chevy flex-plate for an externally balanced engine (assuming your engine is stock)

2. I know I will eventually need a different convertor, but will the stock TH400 convertor work and attach to the 4L60 flywheel till a aftermarket TQ convertor can be found?

Don't know.

There's a GM part # VSS sensor which will work, and feed the stock PCM. You will have to have an A4 program in the PCM to accept the pulse rate from the TH400. Or you can get an interface box from Dakota Digital.

4. Anyone have the driveshaft measurements?

I actually have a Mark Williams 3" Chrome Moly DS available. Used only for about a dozen passes, before I added the Gear Vendor and needed a shorter DS. $425 plus shipping. But I strongly advise you get the tranny in the car, and take an accurate measurement before you buy a DS. Plus or minus 1/2" can cause some problems.

5. Does the TH400 fit into the tunnel with out any massaging?

Yes. I have a TCI case shield aroung the TH400 with no fitup problems.

Anymore advice would be appreciated.

Depends what you are starting with. With the correct tailshaft, you can use a slotted T56 cross-member. Mine actually required a small extension, for some reason. You need a pan with drain provisions - not usually supplied. You need a dipstick that will reach past the cowl. I have a Lokar, and it is too far back under the cowl... real PITA. Then you need to get an adapter to accept the torque arm on the tailshaft of the tranny, or get a TA that mounts to the body, like the Spohn. You will need a cooler. Look at my mods list, linked in the signature, for some of the parts I chose. Madman Racing makes some of the parts.... cross-member, dipstick, and maybe the TA adapter.

Oops didnt realize there was a drivetrain forum.

Thanks, I was looking at your website and noticed your cross member. If I cant get away with elonging the bolt holes, I will have a extension welded on.

All in all it doesnt seem to difficult. I do have the Spohn TQ arm so I am covered there.

Thanks again

Jeff
