I dont want to be a dickk, but can someone please show a timeslip on an automatic (consistent) with and without these types of weight removal (panels, shields, seats, plastic), not including such things as Kmember, A/C, and all the REAL weight reduction stuff. I just dont understand how you guys can make it seem worth it to remove that whole 15 lbs of stuff for not even a 10th, or a 100th, plus its not like that stuff takes 5 minutes to take off.

its true that 15lbs alone doesnt make much difference, but a few pounds here and a few pounds here can add up, my vert with 1/2 take of gas weighs 3400 without me.....that about 200lbs or so i have taken off/weight savings, and i havent done anything major, just removed lots of little things.

i didnt read all the replies to this post...i'm lazy, so sue me.

my point is that if you remove all that weight from the back of the car, you're actually hurting your take off...
a light rear-end is not a good time. the weight actually helps you get traction. so, unless you have a rediculusly good suspension system and some slicks, be careful with how much you reduce the weight.

try with and without the weights, and see which is better.

Thats true, I do know that the little stuff adds up, kinda like buiding a motor from scratch. It just sounded like you were just taking off those little things for the track. Although I know there a lot of people out there that do that and I have never understood it, maybe its just for fun or to get a more full effect from racing, I dont know.

k-member saves a good amount, but most of the weight with them is often from a lightweight brake setup and lightweight a-arms associated with them. I wanted to do one while my motor was out but just couldn't justify the expense.

I took everything out behind the dash:

firewall padding
airbags
heater core box, entire ventilation system
extra wiring
stereo
etc..

looks like stock but probably saved 70+ #'s easily.. then again my car isn't for daily driving. These cars are really hard to make light.. should bought a 5.0 and swapped a sbc into it..

I replaced the stock carpet with one that weigs about 13 #'s which probably saved another 20+ #'s.. removed all seatbelts and replaced with 5 pt harnesses, removed any uneeded brackets.

next thing i am going to do when the car runs is add a lightweight battery which should save 10+ #'s..

This weekend I'll take pictures of my "gutted" interior.. looks like stock with racing seats and a rollbar. The key is to remove the weight were it can't be seen (behind the dash/carpet). I've seen cars stripped down to nothing but an insturment cluster.. that's not the way I wanted my car to look.

My goal was for it to appear like a full interior car but weigh a lot less. Main reason for this is that ligthter cars break fewer parts and are faster than heavier cars. I can't say on my weekend car that I will miss air conditioning or a heater, and I left in the front two speakers in case I want to add a radio back into the car at some point.

Damn, that's heavy. My 4- door grand prix weighed more than 200 #'s less fully optioned with no weight reduction besides removing the spare.

I always have loved the coupe's though. Definately on the top of my list if I want to build another car.. plus they have affordable fiberglass replacements for the body panels on those cars which would make them even lighter without compramising much.
