found something odd inside the intake

Ok I hear that there is supposed to be black grease inside the intake from I forget what but in this motor I have in my garage there is grit in the black stuff. Like I had a relatively clean finger, and swabbed the inside and got a smudge of black on my hand and it feels gritty like bits of sand, now I would compare it to my motor in my car which is in very good condition but its in the shop so Im just curious if thats normal or if it was driven through the sahara with out a filter.......

Probably just carbon buildup.

Did it look like this??!
You might have to cut and paste the link.

Anyways, mine was like that too. More than likely from the PCV valve and just usage. Little carbon buildup to go along. Nothing too horrible.

Dont worry about it too much. i pulled mine when one of my lifters cracked and it was the same way. its just carbon build it(even though it looks like oil) just have it dipped and cleaned and you will be fine. It helped make the air flow smoother after i had it dipped. i noticed a difference on the low end rev. But nothing to worry about......

Remember that your EGR is reintroducing exhaust gases into the intake, it will get dirty like that.
