flywheel/flexplate bolts!! need help please

I dropped the trans to put in a new stall converter, as well as change a leaky rear main seal.

The trans is now out, and iw as working on getting the flywheel off the engine. The six bolts are on there EXTREMELY tight! I tryed with a breaker bar, which was a joke. I then used my 260 ft lb impact wrench which did nothing but begin to strip a bolt. I then borrowed a more powerful impact from work and that did no good. i am now stuck with two partially stripped bolts and no progress on any others.

What else can i do? Some one told me to heat them up and try. But i just thought that would expand the bolt and not do anything. Unless it expands then contracts and breaks the threads loose?

SOME ONE PLEASE HELP! Thanks

Are you using PB blaster / rust eater stuff? And breaker bar > impact wrench. I've busted (loosened) plenty of rusted bolts on 5-ton .50 cal mounts. Put the breaker bar on, get a cheater bat to go over it, and you can get much more than 260 ft-lbs of torque. Also for the stripped bolts, try finding a metric half or SAE 64th to fit on there.

A 6pt socket and a breaker bar is all I have ever used. If you keep a 6pt square on the bolt, you should never round one off. The tighter the bolts, the more care you have to take.

Look for one of those special sockets that can grip damaged bolt heads. You can probably find one at Sears.

I dont think a 6 point will work well on 12 pt bolt
I used some PB blaster and a breaker bar. If you get to a position you can get leverage on it it will take it out no problem. 18 inches should be enough but cheat if you have to.
Crasftman bolt outs work great on them. I had to use them on 3 bolts. get the 13 piece set. hammer on the appropriate socket and take the breaker bar to it.

You might have some thread locker on the bolts. I know mine did. I don't know if it was factory applied or not, but I had to use heat to get the flexplate bolts to break loose.
The smell of burning loctite is actually quite pleasant!

Heat that flexplate up nice and good. Heat is an amazing tool in loosening things.

What he said! I was rounding mine off until I went and bought a 6pt. socket. Then I just cranked hard with a breaker bar and they all came loose.

Re: flywheel/flexplate bolts!! need help please

wow i did not even realize any one was replying to this post the hole time. my email was down.

But anyway, i did get it off. for what ever reason, the heads of the bolts were attached to the flywheel itself. I ended up grinding the heads of the bolts out, and when there was a TINY bit of head left, i hit the bolt in the center with an air hammer. This pulled the head away from the flywheel and i turned it out BY HAND!!!

GO FIGURE.
