Flywheel and balancer needed to balance rotating assembly?
Flywheel and balancer needed to balance rotating assembly?
Machine shop called me today and told me he needed my flywheel and balancer to balance the rotating assembly. Since I still have both inside the car is it necessary? I thought both were neutrally balanced. If not, guess i'll be pulling my engine out earlier than I had anticipated. Thanks.
Re: Flywheel and balancer needed to balance rotating assembly?
You don't need the "balancer".... its a harmonic damper, and can actually complicate the balancing, depending on the type it is ("fluid" type, for example). You need to have the assembly balanced with the flywheel. The stock LT1 is "externally" balanced in the back, with a weight on the flywheel. Aftermarket setups can be balanced internally or externally.... which did you specify with your builder?
Maybe the people who are didn't happen to be online and read your post in the 2:28.
Im the only guy having his engine balanced or what?
Re: Flywheel and balancer needed to balance rotating assembly?
had no idea about it being externally balanced. I just said "balance it"
. I assumed they were internally balanced to begin with, note the smiley with my statement, I by no means meant it.

My guy needed the flywheel to balance it, but not the dampner. The dampner should be neutral balanced anyway, right? As far as which is better, I don't know. Either I would think is fine, internally balanced means that you would have to get your flywheel neutral balanced tho when you made the switch.
