Re: Fault code 36

DTC 36, for the high resolution pulse signal from the cam position sensor in the Opti does turn on the SES light, according the to GM shop manual. The engine can run without the signal, using only the low resolution signal, with a very minor loss of spark timing accuracy. That's on complete loss of the high res signal. If the signal becomes erratic, the engine RPM can become unstable.

The code could be a "stored" code, set when the SES light came on previously. The code will stay stored unless you clear it, or the vehicle is driven a certain number of "drive cycles" without the problem recurring.

Clear the codes by pulling the "PCM BAT" fuse for 30 seconds and see how fast it comes back. In the 94's the PCM BAT fuse is in the panel at the end of the dash.
