Engine Swap
Engine Swap
I have a lead on a nice LT1 out of a 95 Z28. Can I swap it into my 96 Z28 and still use all of the OBD2 sensors / electronics?
I just want to make a simple swap with another engine.
Thanks, for any advice.

Re: Engine Swap
Sort of. It will be missing the crank position sensor (used only for misfire detection), unless you swap the damper hub, reluctor gear, timing cover and CKP sensor from your 96 engine. The engine will run fine without it, but you would get a code, which can be "programmed out". You will have to swap your 96 knock sensor into the 95 engine. You will have to salvage the EVAP vacuum detection switch from your 96, which I believe is on the front of the passenger valve cover, or in that general area.
If you have to pass emissions, you need to keep your 96 exhaust manifolds, since the driver's side accommodates the driver's side cat at the bottom of the manifold. The AIR connections on the 96 manifolds are also different than the 95.

Re: Engine Swap
Thanks for the responses. I really appreciate your advice / knowledge.
Looks like it's a go. I'm going to take a look at the 95 engine tonight.
Seems like a lot to do just to fix a bent balancer mounting shaft, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do I guess.

Re: Engine Swap
Well..... that would be a bent crankshaft, and that is a serious problem, that would justify your action, assuming you don't want to tear the engine down and put in a new crankshaft.
Re: Engine Swap
I checked out a place here called House of Balance, and they can fix the crank and put it back to where it supposed to be.
I'll either fix the crank or get the 95 engine a just do a swap..

Re: Engine Swap
I spun the hub and balancer together on my friends lathe, and it's pretty straight.
I put a dial gauge on the shaft itself, and it's measuring from .000" to .004".
This whole thing has been an ordeal. I bought this car for my son, thinking it would teach him a little about car repair, and get us a closer.
I didn't bet on having to pull / replace the engine.
What's worse is that I took a person's word that swore that there was nothing wrong with the car, just needed a little "TLC"....
Yeah right......
Thanks pal.
I swear, if I have to replace the motor, I'm going to drop this motor on the guys front lawn.

A motor change sounds like a great bonding experience. It might inspire you to build up the "damaged" one and swap it in later down the road. Swapping the motor a couple times on these cars is like an intimate experience when your done and its running good. Very good way to learn alot about your car. Good luck.
