Engine stopped running while driving...

Started the 97TA up with no problem, drive to a gas station four miles away and top-off with ten gallons of gas. Started up without any problems drove a mile, made a right turn and went fifty yards and noticed that when the car was suppose to shift into the next gear around 35mph (it's an auto) but instead nothing happened. Fluttered the gas and no response. Electric still there as the CD was playing, windows worked, but the amp meter was going low. "Check gauges" light on. Pulled safetly to the side of the road. Checked battery connections, they were all okay. Car would crack but never fire. Later had a jump from a Tahoe, car still would not fire, and the amp meter would never go to the right side, 13 -14 amps. Is this an Alternator problem, or a fuel pump? Does the fuel pump cutoff if the voltage in the car dips below a certain level? Had the car trailered back to the house and got it back in the garage. In one sense glad this happened within five miles from my house and not somewhere on a major highway / tunrpike as I was going to head out to NJ-Land for a car show in Williamstown NJ. Any ideas or clues what to look for would be appreciated.
thanks,
ron

Wire going to coil had fallen off.
Weird. I wonder how that would happen and if that's "normal"
Glad I found it and got the car going again.

Very wierd that it just fell off like that...actually really wierd...if memory serves me right doesn't that slide on and actually "grip" the connection in order to stay on?

Yeah... my point exactly.
It's a little "booty" thing that slides on to the coil post.

The only thing I can think of is a while back I had a water pump done. Maybe it was "loosen" up then and just took a year, a turn and some acceleration to finally fall off. I mean, one would think of a "season" at E-town after the water pump replacement would have done the trick.
Anyways... just dang glad I found it before I had the car towed to the dealer...
