Engine quits at random times and wont start up again for an hour...

The engine likes to shut itself off whenever it feels like it. It runs great when it runs though. I can be idling or driving under load and it will just shut itself off. It will not start back up until about an hour later and then runs great again. It has thrown a dtc 16 but I've cleared it and when the engine shuts itself off it comes back again. Could this possibly be a frayed or loose wire near the opti? I have no other theories since the car runs great at all rpm's with no missing or stumbling and then just shuts itself off for awhile. I do have an msd blaster coil but the dtc 16 has nothing to do with the coil. Help?

When it quits, you need to see what is not working. Probably spark or fuel. You have to check intermittents when the symptoms are occurring or you will never find it.

I had a similar problem that 4 mechanics (including 2 dealer mechanics) couldn't resolve. After getting stranded a couple of times I replaced *everything* and problem went away. Here's a shopping list:
Opti
coil
coil module
plugs and wires
ignition module (has feedback to the PCM affecting fuel pump)

yeahididit: What order did you replace things until the problem was fixed? I'm hoping the opti wasnt the final thing. I'm going to fiddle with the icm and various wires and see if I cant make it quit by wiggling a certain wire.

edit: just started the car up and let it idle up to 180*. Right at 180* it shut off. I fiddled with the icm and map wires and neither did anything. I was going to check spark but realized I had no one around to turn the key.

Thermostat possibly? I guess there's only one way to find out. Would some sort of an engine temp sensor cause my problems? I've searched and no one else has the same types of problems I do.
