Engine out the bottom

I know this has been discussed many times in the past. I have done many searches but only found dead links for the how tos. Does anyone have a comprehensive write up on taking an LT1 out the bottom? I should have saved the several that I read years ago but as they say... Hindsight is 20/20.

Thanks,
Matt

Re: Engine out the bottom

The Part I am having trouble imagining is the brake lines and the AC. do you have to open both of those systems? 1 write up I saw they had to remove the master cylinder. I don't remember this from the write ups I looked at years ago. There was one "http://www.michiganspeed.com/enginepull/index.html" that I thought I remembered being pretty good. Does anyone happen to have that saved? Or know who originally posted it?

Re: Engine out the bottom

There may be some trickery that can be done to remove AC compressor and leave it with the car w/o discharging the system but I have never attempted that. I have always disconnected the AC lines and temporarily tied them up to the engine and removed it all from the bottom.

In the past I have disconnected the front two brake lines at the proportioner/abs system side.

There may be easier ways, those are just what I've done and had great success with the engine removal from the bottom method.

I'll get a hold of the guy that originally posted the write up on Michigan speed, I was involved in the process, see where it is currently posted

No trickery, just pull all the accessories from the accessory bracket(Alternator, Power steering pump, Belt tensioner, and AC compressor. Then remove the bolts holding the bracket to the block. Pull it out then you can pull the compressor forward and to the side while going up with the body. Just be sure to brace the back side of the compressor as not to stress the line connections to it(keep the compressor level).

When putting it all back together, be sure to observe the proper torque values for the bolts. It is easy to strip out a bolt hole in the bracket if you are not careful.

Re: Engine out the bottom

Thanks for the info guys. For some reason I don't remember the brakes being that big of a deal. I thought you just had to disconnect the front brake lines from the proportioning block.

Re: Engine out the bottom

I have done this myself. I didn't disconnect the compressor, just unbolted it and wire-tied it out of the way, so I didn't stress the lines. I also disconnected the brake lines from the block, not a big deal just use a line wrench or you may strip the nut off. It's really not that bad of a process, and after doing it, I think I could have an engine pulled out in my garage in one full day's work. Putting it back in was a little trickier(especially by myself). Lining up all the holes and getting the bolts started was the hardest part. If you have a buddy that could help you for a day or two, that extra set of hands is priceless. There's always something that you wish you had a third hand for(holding something in place while the cherry picker is raised, etc). Hope this helps!
