The EGR system does have a purpose.

Just remove the 3 items on the left of the picture. Cap/block all ports.

EGR has the side benefit of reducing the tendancy for detonation, when lugging the engine at low/mid rpm's in too high a gear. Also improves gas mileage a little, by effectively "decreasing" displacement.

there is no need to take the EGR off, if it is functioning correctly. NO PERFORMACE GAIN. the only reason i took mine off was my headers dont have emissions fittings.

but you will need 3 blockoff plates (i made mine from sheet metal and used a dremel tool)
1. take the EGR valve off the back of the intake manifold (driver's side, its black and round)
2. take the EGR tube off the back of the intake manifold (passenger side)
3. take the EGR tubing off the passenger side exhaust manifold (a major PITA to get to on stock manifolds)

and cover all the holes with the block off plates. you can also remove the EGR selonoid (driver's side intake manifold) and plug the vacuum port

i've heard, that althoug the air in the exhaust is extremely hot, its still cooler than the air inside the engine,,so it actually helps. thats why i didn't remove mine.
