E-Brake Broke...

The wire broke right at the handle so you can lift it straight up without it engaging. I keep hearing that I will need run wire all the way to the brakes to fix it, is that hard? I would like to do it myself to save myself cash. Do you think if I take apart the console and find where the wire split, I can splice them together?

Re: E-Brake Broke...

There are 3 ebrake cables. The first cable travels from the handle, through the trans tunnel to the outside of the car, to a little T connection. From there, one cable goes to the passenger side rear brake, and the other to the drivers side. You will just need the first short cable as it is possible to replace it.

Its not hard. You just need to pull out the center console, remove the ebrake handle and tension spring. Remove the driveshaft. From there you should see the cables in the trans tunnel. Pull out the cable from the T to the handle and reinstall it all. It will be time consuming, but nothing is hard persay.

Re: E-Brake Broke...

No i dont have pictures, sorry. Maybe someone else will?

The driveshaft is removed so you can get to the cables. They run along the trans tunnel and the DS is right in the way. To remove it you need to take off the U bolts on the rear end side. You will find them right where the drive shaft meets the Rear. The shaft has a little + looking joint on it. Two of the spokes of the plus are attached to the driveshaft itself, and the other 2 are held to the rear end by bolts on a "U" shape. Be careful when removing those, You need to make sure the bearings dont fall off the + ends (just hold them together).

After those two bolts are off, slide the driveshaft torwards the tranny, it will go in a little allowing the side you were just working on to drop down (this is where you dont want to drop the bearings, just hold them carefully). Once the rear end side has dropped down, you can pull it out of the tranny (it just slides in that connection).

Sounds hard, once you get under there its a easy job and you will hopefully see how its done.

Re: E-Brake Broke...

You don't need to remove the drive shaft.

I replaced my E-brake cable without removing the driveshaft. Just remove the center console, remove the old wire, and replace with the new one. There is a little lever on the E-brake that you need to hold back out of the way so that you can get the new cable on. You'll see what I'm talking about when you replace the cable. The cable should be about $25 from the dealer.

Thats impressive, you know what the say about guys with small arms that fit in tiny spaces....

(ya i dont know either).

Anyways, if you want to try and grab it without pulling the shaft, more power to you, personally i rather spend a few minutes to see what is going on than to fight working around somehthing that is easy to remove. Good luck either way.

Re: E-Brake Broke...

So all in all its not to difficult to change the wire if its only broken from the handle to the first point? I have to remove the console then go from there I guess... Not a bad start for a beginner you guys think?

Easy stuff, just a little time consuming.
