Dumb question or not?

Dumb question or not either way I dont know.

I have a '93Z w/M6 and when Im coasting to a stop with the car out of gear I notice that the RPM's stay a couple hundred RPM's higher then idle. When I come to a stop it comes down to the normal idle. Why does it do that? The car runs fine and there is nothing wrong with it. Just wondering what causes this. Thanks for your help.

Matt

No such thing as a dumb question, only stupid answers.

Unfortunately, I don't have the right one for you.

yeah, no i was wondering the same thing. put in neutral on the highway and the rpms drop but not down to idle (1000). goes to like 2200 or something.

shouldnt it drop all the way down if the car is in neutral?

Mine does the same thing, I donno why though. It will come down to like 1000, just a hiar above idle. Then if i stop, and push in the clutch to shift into 1st or whatever, it drops to where it should Idle, and its fine. Always has done this, think it is a normal thing ...

mine does the same thing and I'm pretty sure the computer controls the RPMs based on the speed of the vehicle. I've noticed mine drops straight down to the computer programmed 850 rpm when I come to a hault at a red light.

I'd say something to do with vacuum or something.

I think this question was asked recently. I think it has something to do with vacuum needed to provide enough for braking and such.

I have no doubt that its normal. The vaccum thing sounds good and makes sence seeing as how the brakes would still be needed. Does anyone know for sure with facts to back it up? Not knowing has been bugging me for years. Than guys for shedding some light on this for me.

Dave, surely yoju could have thought of some stupid answer...

yeah i agree, i am 99.9% sure that it is normal.

but what component needs vacuum at like 1500-2100 rpm? the STRONGEST vacuum occurs at DEceleration and idle. if it went back down to 1000 rpm the vacuum signal would be very similar.
