I have a DTC 51 .....PROM error (faulty or incorrect PROM)


......thats random..... I get the code and then my car runs like crap

 

It usually means the pcm is junk. I get it sometimes if voltage drops really low. Reset the pcm and see if it returns

 

I have reset it

 

It often accompanies a DTC 16 for the opti.

 

I just put in a new opti not even 1000 miles ago....

 

I dont have DTC 16 ....just 51

 

WHy would my EPROM be bad....


does that mean my tune is bad?is the ECU looking for values that are not there?...really...whats the deal!

Welllll I had that happen last fall, and i had only a 7 month old new GM opti with about 3-4000 miles on it..
I tended not to believe it was the opti, since no 16 or 36 DTC was set.. just the DTC 51[eeprom error]
No spark no injector pulses.. nothing..
So I replaced the PCM [got a tune from MadZ28 at the same time, so not a total loss ]
Still no good, so after ruling out the PCM, I tested the opti, and it was COMPLETELY dead.. My advice: check the opti out carefully before assuming it's the PCM.. the PCM's are pretty durable in these cars..
I also posted on here, and got minimal replies.. it's not a common failure..
I did get another opti on warranty tho .. it took a while for the credit but I did get it..

 

An actual PCM problem would be unusual. Low voltage, opti, poor grounds are some possibilities.
