Do I have a fuel issue?

I will post a copy of another thread I made thinking my problem was the opti. After careful consideration I am now thinking I have either a fuel pump issue, or a fuel pressure problem atleast. I didn't get many responses and I'd really really like to get some insight to get to the bottom of this. Thanks to anyone who can help out.

Re: Do I have a fuel issue?

Anyone have any input. I'm planning on getting everything I need within the next week and I don't want to be spending money on something that's wanted more than needed. I had already planned to upgrade the fuel system I figure this is the perfect time for that. But the money spent doing it could be put to better use if that's not my current problem. I need to get the car in tip top shape for the rest of the racing season.

Re: Do I have a fuel issue?

You mentioned in your previous post that you thought it might have a dead cylinder. There was a guy here 2 weeks ago that found out he had 4 dead cylinders cause one of the 2 injector fuses was blown. Sorry if the question had already been answered but there are a few ways to find a dead cylinder. I use an infrared thermometer and check the temps of the exhaust manifold at each cylinder. You can also use water in a spray bottle. Once I find one, I confirm it by pulling off the suspect plug wire and prove or disprove it is dead. If it's dead, the engine will act the same when you pull the plug wire. If it is ok the engine will run crappy when you pull the plug wire.

Note that some people will pull the injector harness off to find a dead cylinder and some of them incorrectly assume the injector is not firing. Remember that a cylinder needs 3 things to fire, fuel, spark and compression. Therefore if any one of the 3 is missing, the cylinder will not fire. If you had a bad valve and compression was too low and you found it by pulling off the spark plug wire, that does not mean it isn't getting spark. BTW, if you have a dead cylinder due to a spark problem, that could be very bad. A cylinder that is getting fuel but does not fire will eventually destroy the cylinder wall and rings at least due to wash down of the oil film on the cylinder wall. This is also called "souping".

As far as your problem is concerned, I think you have dirty injectors. Over time, the fuel constantly gets cooked inside the injectors when the car is shut down and deposits form. The orifice in an injector is incredibly tiny and takes very little to restrict it. I recommend you have the injectors professionally cleaned either on the car or off. I use 3M injector cleaner hooked directly to the fuel rail and it's simply a matter of running a can of cleaner for 10 minutes and it's done. I do suggest you have them done off the car so you can compare flow rate. Just my .02.

Good luck
Dave
