dissapointing news, or is it?

Well as some of you may know I am buying heads/cam/1.7rr/intake manifold off of a guy in town for $650 altogether. He just took the heads to a reputable shop in town to get flowed and they only flow 230 or so. I was dissapointed with these numbers and so was he. With the crane 227 cam (210/224), 1.7rr, ported intake manifold, and these mildly ported heads he ran 110+mph. For $650 for all this stuff its still a great deal right?

BTW, He's getting the heads resurfaced and a new valve job as we speak. Nice guy if you ask me...

What do you guys think about this purchase? I'm leaning towards doing it because it will be a nice increase from a stock motor and its hella cheap for what I am getting. If I had unlimited money i'd go with LE2 heads/cc503/blah blah blah, but thats just not the case here. I'm a poor college student haha.

What was done to the heads? I'd be more worried that someone might have screwed them up porting the heads and not knowing what they were doing. What did the mid and low lift #s look like?

If you decide against it, I'd like to buy the cam.

230 at what lift? FLowed at 28" h20? Having heads what? With 1.7s, I'd make sure the geometry is ok for stock push rods before running it. JMHO, but I believe you will be happier with the 210/224 than a 305.

The heads got Manley valves (2.00/1.56 give or take .01) and a port job on them. Obviously it was only a stage I port job or so. Like i said, he trapped over 110 in the 1/4 with them and that small *** cam so they can't flow THAT bad. Thats how i see it...

I'd guess at .5 lift, but not positive. All I know is Tim at Airflow Performance said they flowed 230 as compared to the LT1 heads he ports at about 270... Yea I will be using all the same parts on the engine as the previous guy did, so I'm sure the 1.7rr will not be a problem.

I'm betting they are pretty much equal to stock heads, with the 227 cam I trapped 115mph full weight.

well stock heads flow 290cfm and have smaller valves, and these flow 230cfm and have larger valves, so ya not stock, but still not that great I know..

Stock flow is ~205, but 97's flow more than earlier years, so those heads probably don't outflow your's by that much.

Re: dissapointing news, or is it?

110 with heads/cam ain't a big deal...

I'd stick with just a cam only setup instead of sticking those heads on there.. they might do ya more harm than good if not done properly.

Or an LE1...

Re: dissapointing news, or is it?

so you guys are honestly telling me I should stick with the cam only?? I need to decide this today, so that he doesnt waste his money on a valve job and gettin it resurfaced. Most of you probably know more than I though, so I'll trust you all if that's what you think I should do. Any more suggestions?

I ran a best of 112.81 MPH and average of 110 mph traps with just a cc503 cam and the rest of my supporting bolt-ons. Take it for what ya will.

Well if that came off a 94 should be a good casting then not the light weight castings but should be anything but the 561 casting. If hes gonna do the work on theds to make them a bolt on deal and you dont have to pay for valves or a valve job i say go for it for $650 if your getting heads,cam,1.7 RR,and pushrods
