dipstick issues
my shop called and said they are having trouble getting my dipstick to go all the way in, im assuming its an issue with the spalayed main caps? i also have a canton oil pan. engine is currently in the car and oil pan is on, is there a way to modify the dipstick and remark it? hopefully the pan does not have to come down. i just want my car finished allready

Tell them to make a mark on the dipstick tube where it stops and meets the block. Pull out the dipstick and measure the amount from the mark to the rolled lip of the tube. Add about 1/2" to that measurement, and cut that amount off of the tube (engine side). This will make the tube fit without hitting the mains, but the indicator itself MAY still make contact. Checking clearance when the motor was on the stand would have told you whether or not the indicator would get snagged by the crank. You can always cut off the indicator anywhere you want (at the bottom of the cross-hatches for instance) and hope for the best.

I had the same prob. 383 w/ splayed caps and Canton pan. I put a sharp point on the end. I fabbed my own stick w/ -8an cap and union with 1/2" alum tube. But, the point allowed it to fit @ a specific radial orientation. B.
