diagnostic trouble code scanning.

i just want to know is there an alternative to going to a shop and having a computer on a camaro scanned to find a trouble code,dont think make some time of cable you can buy or something to do it yourself?

You can buy a hardware "scanner" like the Auto Xray (~$170), a ScanMaster ($250) or one of the Actron units.... but do NOT buy the $30 Actron "code reader" because that only works on the 93, with "short-the-pins" capability. Will NOT work on 94 and up.

Alternatives are software data logging systems - TTS DataMaster (free download, 20 free uses); FreeScan (free download), Diacom (outdated POS) and pcmcomm (bundled with LT1_Edit programming software). Then you need a cable from AKM Electronics to connect your laptop to the ALDL connector under the dash (~$50-100).

All of these systems go beyond simple "code reading", allowing you to look at the critical engine sensors, PCM parameters, etc.
