Delete Opti or no????
Delete Opti or no????
To continue beating the proverbial dead horse:
What do you guys think? Let's say that I needed to replace my opti (Dave, strictly hypothetically
). There's so much debate with Delteq's replacement. Yes, it costs $800, but hell, to be able to replace wires that easy??? Heck yeah! What is your guys' take? If send this thing up to 500 RHP or more, I assume it won't be a problem since it is merely the timing of the spark. Just curious.... What do you say?

Re: Delete Opti or no????
Agreed.....I looked into it myself before, and my dad did this to a car a few years ago.....I mean it works fine but I agree with ^.....Just get a gm replacement opti if you need one......Although, I do think the kit that uses the LS1 coils is awesome.....There are a ton of articles over this though.
Re: Delete Opti or no????
How long would you estimate an opti change? My understanding is that you:
1. Remove the serpentine belt
2. Remove water pump
3. Remove crank pulley
4. Replace opti
5. Replace previously mentioned components.
If it's really that easy, I would do it, but I heard horror stories about weekend change jobs. How long did it take you to change it for the first time? Does the radiator have to come out?

Re: Delete Opti or no????
Radiator? Absolutley not. Probably take u like 2-3hrs for the first time with a cautious approach.
I could do mine in under 30 mins with all the tools layed out. Ive done it 2 or 3 before or so.

Re: Delete Opti or no????
Dam those noobs.... -_- Oops, I mean, probably didn't have the right tools. Well in that case, I'll opt for a new optispark if needed. I read somewhere in a post that it will take 10 hours to do (another forum). Let's say I opt for an LT1 Xtreme Timing set. How much more would that add?
Re: Delete Opti or no????
Once you answer Injuneer's Why question...
Often times the most time consuming portion of the opti change is getting the damper off the hub as it usually rusts on there. Once you get it off, clean the hub and the damper and apply a little antiseize for the next time.
To change the timing set you're going to have to drain the oil and dropt he front of the oil pan. You'll have to pull the crank hub as well. Doesn't add much time but you have to be certain to get the timing marks lined up correctly....

Re: Delete Opti or no????
Injuneer, yes. That set. It adds a negligible amount of hp, but more important won't stretch when I increase the HP in the next few years, especially at higher RPMs. I'm already down there, why do a job twice? The car has 160k on it and I've never replaced the timing set, anyway....
Re: Delete Opti or no????
Perhaps we're not on the same page...or maybe I am totally confused. My impression is that the ED TS is actually a double roller set which reduces the friction and effort needed to turn the chain when compared to the stock version. It also lasts longer with frequent high RPM usage by reducing the amount of stretch which may occur. Are these two assumptions completely off the mark?
Re: Delete Opti or no????
The LT4 timing set is a single roller. You upgrade from stock to the roller for durability, not HP gain, simply because there is none. One could maybe make the argument that a double roller/single roller is HEAVIER than the stock one, actually reducing HP. But in actuality the HP gain/loss here is negligible at best.
Reliability and durability are why people upgrade. If you want HP, convert to a double roller (Cloyes 3145) and an electric water pump. This will net you around 10HP.

Re: Delete Opti or no????
1. How much longer will it honestly take to install for someone who hasn't ever done this before?
2. Is the 95 TA LT1 and 95 Z28 LT1 the same?
Thanks!

IMO, I'd convert to a double roller and EWP for the same price of just the LT4 ED set.
