degreeing a cam??

What is the built in advance on a 306 cam? when I stalled mine I just put the dowel pin at 3 o'clock. Is that bad? could I be losing power?

4 degrees ground into the cam and you should install it straight up. #1, #6 at TDC and cam at 3 o'clock like you said is right.

Ok, the timing when I put it on, little gear @ 12 and the big gear @ 6 and the cam @ 3 Correct?

I dont want to confuse this so the easiest way to explain is dot-to-dot. The dot on the cam(large) gear should be at 6 o'clock and the dot on the crank(small) gear should be at 12 o'clock.
