Ok, inside of the bulb, there are TWO wires, or filaments, whatever their called. One is the BRIGHT filament and the other is the DIM filament. DRLs use the BRIGHT filament of the bulb, not the dim ones. When you turn on your headlights, the BRIGHT filament turns off, and the DIM one's come on, you don't need the bright ones at night when you got your headlights on...because their really bright

Does this help? Or did I just confuse you and myself some more?

okay, when you go out to your car next time, turn on your headlights and then turn on your flashers. when the flashers flash on (bright) thats what the DRL's look like. when they flash off, thats the parking lights on normal with head lights on (dim).
