DAMN fault code #16!

ok this summer i just replaced the opti with a new one from jason cromer,i put in a csi wp all new ngk tr55 and all my wires are good.after a couple days of running fine it starts missing when i put a load on it.at idle its not bad at all.im not throwing any ses light but where i work at they hooked it up to the computer and thats the code it threw.the mechanic said the code means possible problem in distribitor cap or dist. connection.he suggest i spray electrical cleaner in the vent holes.what should i do im so drained from this that i cant even think.should i unplug all the wires into the opti and spray them too??any ideas please emial at ledfootz28@hotmail.com or just reply to this message.

16 is a very common DTC... i wouldnt worry too much about it. now if you are getting 36 that would be an entirely different thing and probably mean its time for a new opti.

DTC 16 if for "loss of low resolution pulse from the Optispark distributor". If your engine is still running, it is a "stored" code. If it was an "active" code, the engine would not start. The PCM would shut down the fuel system on loss of low resolution pulse.

It is often found as a "stored" code on a scan. Clear it, and see how quickly it comes back. Its possible during a startup, the PCM could not find the pulse quick enough and set the code.

You might also want to check the harness connector on the Opti. It can get corroded and contribute to setting the code. Also check the grey "Opti test connector" on the metal bracket in the middle of the passenger side of the intake manifold. Very unusual for a problem to appear in that connector, but its worth checking.
