to cut oil pan gasket or not?

I'm currently trying to put a new felpro (blue) oil pan gasket in and I'm having all kinds of trouble trying to shimmy it under the rods. There is VERY little space between the bottom of the pan and the internals. Who on this board has had success in simply cutting the gasket and using some ultra copper or black RTV to reseal it? I want to hear everybody's stories god or bad. I really don't want to drop the k-member, so I'm looking for the easy way out.

When I installed a new cam in my motor I ended up tearing the front of the OP gasket off. After several hours putting everything back together I didnt feel like dropping the pan to replace the new gasket I had so instead used some of that black gasket maker RTV. Now probably 6000 miles later it is still not leaking a drop. Some guys say do it right.. I say do whatever works.

I had no problem, just remove the bolts on the motor mounts, and lift the moter up about 3 inches, i do believe the position of the crank makes a difference as well.

I would try to leave it as one piece, since part of the reason they made it one piece was to keep it from leaking.

When I put the hotcam in my old setup I just cut the gasket where it went around the timing cover and used RTV when I put the cover back on and it never leaked a drop.

Do not cut the gasket...... place the gasket around the outside of the pan, opposite if the sealing surface. Then work the gasket around the lip of the pan onto the sealing surface. Worked great for me and gasket goes over pan lip easy since it flexes due to being rubber.

Yeah i did mine by going around the outside of the oil pan...worked like a charm only thing was that you had to cut the oil dipstick hole so that the dip stick will fit...or just remove it and put it back in....either way will work....

Just to let everybody know, I got the gasket on without cutting anything at all and it went RIGHT over the lip from underneath. No problem. It took all of 30 seconds to do. Man, I feel bad for everybody on the board who had to drop the k-member. I wouldn't do it that way. (Course, I had my headers, y-pipe, dipstick, and heads off when I did this, and THAT helps )
