Crank shaft sensor?

I went to a dyno shop today the dyno guy said I need a crank shaft sensor on my 1996 camaro. He said it will not set the timing correct; but I thought on my obd2 car the only thing that sensor was for was detecting miss. Does the sensor have any affect on performance? Who is full of **** me or him.?

I think I am right, on a obd2 lt1 the only thing the csp sensor is for is miss fire detection. The opti controls all spark and injection on a obd2 lt1. I tried to tell the dyno guy that but he thinks he is correct because he has 40yrs experience. He thinks my timing is off because of the deleted crank shaft sensor; I think he is incorrect. We talked about it for 30min and I ended up agreeing with him to end the argument.

That was my decision after speaking with him. He was a good guy, but he is one of those jack of all trades master of none guys. I think west coast corvettes is going to be the best choice for a dyno here in So Cal.

You can NOT tune an LT1 with only a CRANK position signal. In fact it can't run on the crank position, because from 94-97 the engine uses sequential injection.

To sequentially fire the injectors, you need a CAM position signal. The cam position signal comes from the optical sensor in the Optispark - the low resolution pulse signal. Once you know the cam position, you also know the crank position, but that's no longer important.

That does not work the opposite way.... knowing the crank position, you still don't know the cam position, so with a crank sensor, you can not run sequential fuel injection. You have to run batch fire, or bank-to-bank.

Yes. It is only used for detecting misfires.

Sure.... 93-95 LT1's run just fine without a crank position sensor. To repeat... the crank position sensor was added in 1996, for the sole purpose of meeting the OBD-II requirement of identifying misfires. IT IS NOT USED TO RUN THE ENGINE!
