The only thing i can figure that you are talking about is a part of the crank position sensor. I dont know what year your car is but if it is OBD II then that might be what you are talking about, and in that case you definatley need to keep it there. Other than that, you just need to press the hub on to the crank snout, positioning doesnt really matter, as the pulley is not a balancer, but more of a dampner.

my car is obd2 and so thats what it is a crank position sensor, that makes sense. i took the timing cover off and hamered it back into place and tried again with no luck, the hub just keeps pushing it back. would a slotted hub from thunder racing work, is that what that slot is for?

There are 2 keys for the LT1 crank and 2 hubs as well. The key for OBD2 has a larger raised portion to key the timing chain as well as the reluctor wheel for the CPS. OBD2 hub is also shorter because of the reluctor wheel. OBD1 doesn't have a CPS/reluctor so the key is shorter and the hub is longer. Make sure you have the correct combination because the hub isn't suppose to touch the key.

If you are putting a key in the front slot-don't (unless you have a keyed hub). Only a special cut-back key is required (in the rear slot) for the crank gear.

Did you recently get the engine rebuilt? A lot of places will use a key in the front slot so they can rotate the motor over while working on it, maybe they forgot to take it out.
