coolant temp sensor pigtail

coolant temp sensor pigtail
yes, i did a search on it, and someone said i needed to use the "A" terminal. so i did. basically what the problem is that i broke my coolant temp sensor in the head when doing headers. so i bought a new one, installed it, only to find that the pigtail had been melted by the headers (awesome!!), so I finally just got a pigtail today and the original pigtail only had one wire, and the new one has two.
I tried using the A terminal, still didn't work. my temp gauge sat below 0 and didn't even think about moviung even after 10 minutes of idling. all i basically did was strip about 1/8" wire from the existing pigtail wire (cutting off the old connector of course), crimped a butt connector on there, stripped about 1/8" of wire off of the new pigtail wire (the one in the a terminal), and then crimped that closed.
I tried the B terminal too, no luck. Not sure what to do... is it possible that the CTS in the water pump that goes to the PCM is faulty?
