Cone of Silence question

My 96 SS is # 1848

I had the exhaust shop take my muffler off (2 on the left) to look for the "cone". There wasn't one there, and they looked at me like I was crazy . It didn't look like anyone had ever had the muffler off before ( they had a hell of a time getting it off), so is there anywhere else in the exhaust that they could have stuck the cone? My build number is pretty high so it should have it, correct?

Thanks!

Paul

I may be wrong, but I thought the cone was on 1997 models. If present, it would have been on the inlet to the muffler.

This mentions something about some in 96 having it, and I had another thread about my car being slow and someone mentioned it as well. Apparently mine doesn't I guess

I'm sorry, I don't see where it says 1996s had it. It did say built in 1996, referring to the early 1997 model year cars that were obviously built in 1996.

I still remember when in early 1998, I found out about that stinkin reducer that SLP stuffed in my tail pipe. The guy at the muffler shop was skeptical and smug as we both labored to get that muffler and pipe separated. He changed his tune after we found that sucker. I took a while to hacked it out.

Oh, yeah, your car didn't get one. Don't sweat it.

"Cone of Silence", only on 1997's with TOTL and SLP build numbers greater than ~0052. Many of these (97's) were built in late 96.

What exactly does this 'cone of silence' do?

The early 97's with the TOTL exhaust could not pass the NHTSA noise standard. The cone is a restricter that made the exhaust quieter.
