compression ?'s

what do you do when you find a bad cylinder, bent push rod? broke spring? idk:S what causes 1 to have low compression? i'm having a compression test done this week to find the bad one. its haveing trouble turning over and my mechanic told me that there was a cylinder missing. and my car likes to lug forward (idk if thats the best way to describe it) when i'm drivingin any gear at any rpm. thanks for the help

Usually the rings are worn or the valves aren't seated properly. I broken spring could do it.

thats a pretty big leap. the motor has 8k miles and someone is talkin a compression check. first off-if it is having problems turning over-im assuming you mean when you start it up, prolly worse when hot, its cranking slow thats aint nothin to do with low compression. ok, theres that. now generally, speaking from my 20 plus years (yikes thats scary) of repairing cars, compression checks and all the related labor and time required to perform one-especially on these friggin things-they are a thing of the past-cant your guy set it on his scope\analyzer and do a quickie power contribution test, if he is so concerned a hole isnt up to spec. mechanically? has he even suggested a scope check of the secondary ignition system? thats without a doubt the first place to go and look, based on what you have written in your post. has anyone started at the simple end of the diagnostic spectrum before the "got a missing cylinder" diagnosis. i would ask some black and white yes no questions before i buy into a ring job. fyi heres some contributing causes for lack of power contribution from a single cylinder in a multi cylinder engine (gasoline) burnt valve, burnt seat, valve siezed in guide, sometimes intermittently, worn rings, bent con rod, individual runner intake leak, bad injector, bad injector driver, intermittent or continuous power short to ground, ground short to power, faulty egr valve, passages, or controls, lifted head, cracked head, cracked block, cracked spark plug, cracked distributor cap on and on and on it goes. get a mechanic who will get you an accurate written diagnosis in no more than an hour shop diagnostic time. at the most. unless its something like this-"well you have got low compression on whatever cylinderfillintheblanks and at a minimum the head needs to come off to ascertain the cause of the low hole" and with that he will likely be able to give you the worst case dollar figure on top of the r and r labor. sound like a second opinion wouldnt hurt.
