Code 36, heat related?
Code 36, heat related?
I drive my car to work with no code most of the way. After 15 minutes, every time I'm almost to work I throw a code 36.
It just seems wierd that it's such a calculated failer every time. Is it the heat killing the opti or what?
Thanks,

Re: Code 36, heat related?
It sure seems that way. You would think if it were a poor connection problem, it would occur more randomly than that.
Check the signal while the engine is cold with a DC voltmeter at the connector about 2 feet from the opti. Check from the pink/black wire to the purple/white wire with the power on. Then run it to heat it up to the point of SES and check it again.

Re: Code 36, heat related?
The code tells you the PCM can't find the high resolution pulse from the Opti. That means it has to estimate the crank position from the 8 low resolution pulses for the cam position. This reduces the accuracy of the spark timing, and could lead to detonation, but the knock sensor should pick it up and retard the timing before you can hear it.
Why would you expect it to not stay in closed loop?
